Semaglutide FAQ's
- What is compounded semaglutide?
- Semaglutide is the active ingredient in the brand named Ozempic and Wegovy. Compounded semaglutide refers to the customized preparation of the medication Semaglutide by a compounding pharmacy. This allows for personalized dosages and formulations based on individual patient needs.
- What is compounded tirzepatide?
- Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Monjouro, and it works as both a GLP-1 and GIP-1 agonist. In clinical trials it has shown to be more effective in weight loss than semaglutide.
- Why might compounded semaglutide be necessary?
- Compounded semaglutide can be beneficial for patients requiring specific dosages or formulations not readily available in commercial products. This approach is often used when personalized treatment is deemed essential.
- Commercial Ozempic, Wegovy, and Monjouro are only covered by insurance for Type 2 Diabetes, and the cash price ranges from $900-1300 per month. By compounded the generic version we are able to source it at a more affordable monthly price.
- How does compounded semaglutide differ from commercial versions?
- Compounded semaglutide is tailored to individual specifications, offering flexibility in dosage strength and form. Commercial versions are standardized and come in pre-determined doses and formulations.
- Is semaglutide covered by insurance?
- Wegovy has been FDA approved for the use of weight loss, but only with accompanying co-morbidities, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, hypertension. Ozempic and Monjouro are approved only for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.
- How does semaglutide work for weight loss?
- Semaglutide is a GLP-1 medication, or glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, which work by mimicking the action of a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1. The medication has 4 main ways in which it helps facilitate weight loss:
- Glucose Regulation: GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar levels. When you eat, GLP-1 stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin, in turn, facilitates the uptake of glucose by cells for energy.
- Appetite Control: GLP-1 also acts on the brain to reduce appetite and increase the feeling of fullness. This can contribute to weight loss in some individuals.
- Slowing Gastric Emptying: GLP-1 slows down the emptying of the stomach, leading to a more gradual release of nutrients into the bloodstream. This helps in better blood sugar control.
- Suppressing Glucagon Release: GLP-1 inhibits the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. By reducing glucagon levels, GLP-1 helps prevent excessive glucose production by the liver.
- What are the potential side effects with compounded semaglutide?
- As with any medication, there are potential side effects. Patients should discuss their medical history and any concerns with their healthcare provider before starting compounded semaglutide.
- The most common side effects are gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal, nausea, diarrhea, bloating.
- It is recommended that anyone with a history of thyroid cancer not use semaglutide. A research study in 2023 showed no increased incidence on any type of cancer occurrence associated with semaglutide use.
- How is compounded semaglutide administered?
- Semaglutide is typically administered via injection, either self-administered or it can be done in the clinic.
